Our Story & Mission

Rooted at Harvard, Reaching the World

How a group of alumni built a lasting home for Harvard's Muslim community.

Since 2004

Our Story

HUMA was founded in 2004 by alumni who believed the Harvard Muslim alumni community would be strengthened by an official organization. From the start, HUMA set out to support Muslim life on campus, including the long-term goal of a Muslim chaplaincy at Harvard. That goal was realized when HUMA funded Harvard's first paid Muslim chaplain from 2015 to 2017. The chaplaincy is now supported by the University. Today HUMA is a global network of Muslim graduates spanning every Harvard school and generation.

Our Mission

“The mission of Harvard University Muslim Alumni (HUMA) is to connect Harvard Muslim alumni and faculty and thereby to support Islam and Muslims at Harvard.”

What Guides Us

Our Four Pillars

  1. 01

    Alumni Networking

We connect Harvard Muslim alumni and faculty with shared interests through our Global Iftaar Program, Welcome to Your City events and socials in cities around the world.

  2. 02

    Supporting Muslims on Campus

We work with the Harvard Islamic Society and Muslim student groups across the College and graduate schools, providing financial and other support.

  3. 03

    Islamic Resources at Harvard

We help build resources for Muslims at Harvard and for anyone seeking to understand Islam, and we work to reduce misunderstanding about the faith.

  4. 04

    Access to Harvard

We believe every student deserves the chance to attend a world-class institution. We encourage young Muslims to aim high and apply.
